Papillons - General Description
Papillons are small, elegant toy dogs. Their butterfly ears that carried erect or drooping make them stand out. Once called the Squirrel Spaniel, the Papillon has a long, plumed tail that is curled and carried up over the back. The Papillon has a long, fine, silky coat that is primarily white with patches of any other color around both eyes and ears. Their chest is covered with extra hair, but they do not have an undercoat. The Papillon's muzzle is short and somewhat pointed. Their eyes are round, dark and medium in size.

The Papillon is an energetic, curious and intelligent dog. They are very athletic and love to explore and will find mischief. It is important that they have mental and physical stimulation and are not left alone for many hours during a day. These dogs require a lot of human companionship and attention. If the Papillon is bored, they can become destructive. If you and your family are gone all day, this breed is probably not for you. They also have small bladders for their size, and they need to potty more often than other dogs similar in size.
The Papillon must be socialized and trained at a young age. They can have a tendency to become attached to one or two family members, and they show aggression towards other family members. It is critical that they are not allowed to show any signs of aggression towards humans. Most will say the Papillon makes a good watchdog. They do however have a habit of barking excessively. They will warn you about any unusual sound. This can cause a problem for apartment style living. Papillons are not outdoor dogs, and they should be given sweaters to wear when it is cold.
