Papillons - Breed History

Papillons were originally called the dwarf spaniel or the epagneul nain. One of the oldest breed of dogs, it is recorded in history almost 700 years ago in Europe. Later the Papillon was called the Continental Toy Spaniel. They have been recognized in Italian art in the 13th through the 15th century. This breed was popular during the Renaissance period in Italy and much of its development is understood because of its presence in paintings.

The French word "papillon" means butterfly. Phalene means night moth. The Phalene is the other ear type, which has ears dropped alongside the head. These two varieties of Papillons are considered one breed and are usually shown together.

Papillons - Health Considerations

A long-lived breed, the Papillon is generally hardy. They can have some hereditary health problems, typical of small breeds. Patellar luxation, palate or bite defects, and open fontanels are among them. Responsible breeders of Papillons have their litters screened for possible genetic problems. The Papillon is an anesthetic-sensitive breed. Before surgery or dental procedures, a Papillon owner should consult a veterinarian.

Papillons - with Other Pets

Papillons generally do well with other pets in the house. However, it is necessary to supervise your pets, as a larger dog can easily injure a Papillion. Papillons are known to be able to make friends with cats. At least, they can share the household quite well. Papillons make great family pets, provided that you respect the needs of the dog and understand their purpose.
